End of Life Vehicle policy

Environmental End of Life Vehicle Recovery

The EC ELV Directive (2000/53/EC) aims to reduce the amount of waste from cars and light goods vehicles when they are scrapped. In particular it:includes tightened environmental standards for vehicle treatment sites requires that last owners must be able to dispose of their vehicles free of charge sets rising reuse, recycling and recovery targets restricts the use of hazardous substances in both new vehicles and replacement vehicle parts.

In support of this legislation, Isuzu Truck (UK) Ltd have formed a partnership with Autogreen (www.autogreen.org) to assist customers with the disposal of their vehicles in accordance with the requirements.

ELV

Around 2,000,000 vehicles each year reach their end of life in the UK. The vehicles have the potential to release harmful substances into the environment if they are not stored, treated and disposed of properly.

Isuzu Truck (UK) Ltd believes that it is an active part of the Isuzu C.A.R.E. commitment to take a pro-active role and reduce the environmental impact at every stage in the life cycle of their vehicles, development, production, use and final disposal. If we all work together to have more efficient utilization of resources and by re-using scrap materials, this will benefit the future by reducing the impact on the environment, reduce the depletion of natural resources and reduce the potential pollution related to materials that is sent to landfill sites.

Vehicle product design now takes re-cycling into consideration by using alternative materials and build techniques with a view to reducing of the overall environmental impact of the product.

In Europe, legislation was passed and in turn adopted by the UK for automotive re-cycling and this is known as the End of Vehicle Life (ELV) Directive.

The ELV Directive:

The Directive aims to reduce the amount of waste from End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) in the categories N1 (goods vehicles having a technically permissible maximum laden mass not exceeding 3500kgs GVM) and M1 (passenger cars).

In particular it requires the UK to ensure that ELVs can only be scrapped (“treated”) by government authorized dismantlers or shredders. These dismantlers must meet tightened environmental treatment standards from the outset and these require the vehicle manufacturers and importers to establish adequate systems and service providers for the collection of their own brand qualifying vehicles they have put on the market and when at the end of their useful life, ensure that they are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

There are re-cycling and recovery targets of 85 percent by weight that has to be achieved (including a maximum of 5% energy recovery) and from 2015 a re-cycling and recovery target of 95% (including a maximum of 10% energy) recovery is proposed.

All new vehicles must be able to comply with the banning of the use of hazardous materials such as Lead, Mercury, Cadmium and Hexavalent Chromium in their construction and new Isuzu Trucks chassis cabs meet this requirement with their choice of construction materials.

To enable the disposal of Isuzu N series qualifying vehicles in an environmentally friendly manner and to be able to meet the re-cycling and recovery targets, Isuzu Truck (UK) Limited signed a 10 year agreement with Autogreen Limited.

In its role as the Isuzu Truck (UK) Ltd service provider, Autogreen will offer a contracted comprehensive network of “take back” and “Authorised Treatment Facilities” (ATFs) throughout the United Kingdom ensuring that the minimum mandated re-use, recovery and re-cycling targets are met.

Qualifying Isuzu Truck (UK) Ltd Vehicles

Isuzu Truck (UK) Ltd has a responsibly for vehicles that it has placed on the market in the category defined as an N1 goods vehicle whose Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) does not exceed 3500kgs.

These are more commonly known as the Isuzu NKR, NKR Wide cab, Grafter, or Grafter N35.150 models and can be identified by looking at the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) plate located on the B pillar behind the drivers head. If the GVM is showing as 3500kgs the vehicle qualifies for the ELV disposal.

The process

The contracted ATF will take back free of charge any qualifying Isuzu Truck ELVs that are presented by the last owner or keeper (presenting evidence of ownership).

All of the Autogreen contracted ATF partner sites are fully compliant with DEFRA standards and have been approved/licensed by the Environmental Agency. In addition all contracted sites operate state of the art re-cycling equipment. Through their computerised links to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) they will be able to de-register cars so that the last owners responsibility for the vehicle ends with a unique Certificate of Destruction (COD) being issued at the end of the process.

When a vehicle has reached the end of its useful life and is presented at one of our contracted sites with the appropriate documents, it may not be destroyed immediately but once entering the process will be de-polluted as follows by:

The vehicle will then be crushed and then transferred to a site where it will be shredded to enable separation techniques to be used to recover the ferrous and non-ferrous metals for recycling.

The remaining material known as shredder residue can be further treated and sorted for the recovery of glass and other materials, which has increasingly a number of applications such as an aggregate for road building. Little of the vehicle, if anything, is wasted.

Battery Disposal

Disposal of Vehicle Batteries

In accordance with the relevant requirements stipulated in the 2009 Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulation. Under the Waste Batteries Regulation batteries are not allowed to go to landfill or be incinerated so cannot be included with ordinary refuse and must now be sent for recycling.

The Waste Batteries legislation deems Isuzu Truck (UK) Limited to be a producer of Automotive Batteries with certain obligations regarding the collection of waste batteries from the 1st of January 2010.

An automotive battery is any battery that is used for automotive starter, lighting or ignition power.

Operators of businesses where waste automotive batteries arise in significant volumes as part of their day to day business (such as garages, scrap yards, end-of-life vehicle Authorised Treatment Facilities or Civic Amenity Sites) are entitled to have their automotive batteries removed free of charge. Producers such as Isuzu Truck (UK) Limited are not obliged to collect batteries from individual private customers (vehicle owners) however householders are allowed to deposit waste automotive batteries at Civic Amenity Sites without charge.

Portable Batteries

Producers such as Isuzu Truck (UK) Limited who place less than 1 tonne of portable batteries on the market in a year have no collection, treatment or recycling obligations.

There are however many thousands of free collections points in Stores, Supermarkets such as Currys, Mothercare, Poundland, Sainsburys, Tesco, WH Smith, Boots together with Libraries, Schools and other Public buildings.
